Students celebrate as A level results are published

Date published: 17 August 2006

Sixth Forms and students throughout the Borough celebrated today (Thursday 17 August) as A level  results published showed improvements.

Graham Wright, Head Teacher at Wardle High told Rochdale Online: “We are pleased to report further improvements in the ‘A’ level results. Not only did the school maintain its AB percentage, there was a further increase in the average point score per student and an overall pass rate of 98 %. Some students achieved 100% on individual papers, Year 12 AS results also show a significant improvement on previous years which bodes well for the future.

"Most students have secured the places they were offered in higher education.

"The results confirm the confidence placed in the school by HMI during their last visit commenting that the progress in the Sixth Form is in line with expectation.

"The majority of students have achieved or exceeded their target grades and there have been particularly pleasing individual performances especially amongst the girls.”

Elsewhere in the Borough, Middleton’s overall pass rate was the highest in their 16 year history at 95%  - with thirteen subjects showing 100% pass rates.

Amy Gilligan of Saint Cuthbert's gained the results she required, three A's and a B, to enable her take up the offer of a place at Oxford.

Rochdale Council Executive Director of Education, Terry Piggott, said: "The A level results suggest some improvement in all four local schools with sixth forms. But this is a first impression - we can't be sure until we have analysed results more carefully as there is a new scoring system is in place for this year.

"Overall, it looks as though there has been about an 8% improvement in the average points score per entry - the fairest measure.

"I congratulate all the students who've produced these improved results, their teachers and parents".

Historically, local performance at 'A' level has been amongst the lowest in the country. Many local students choose to study for A-levels at schools or colleges in Oldham and Bury. The structure of provision is now being looked at. This follows the Strategic Area Review conducted last year by the Learning and Skills Council, the body responsible for funding post-16 education and training.
