Jobs could go at Stakehill Industrial Estate

Date published: 12 July 2007

400 jobs on the Stakehill Business Park in Middleton could go if Wincanton Logistics closes its Middleton One depot in November unless the owners can find a different use for the site. Staff at the supermarket distribution company have been working to supply Tesco stores but the firm now says that the site is not needed after a recent restructure.

Brian Bowen from the union Unite said that this was "devastating" news.

Tesco said that the Wincanton depot was too small to cope with an ever-increasing demand.

Wincanton will now work alongside Unite (T&G) Trade Union to try to identify alternative uses for the site in Middleton to try to avoid closure and secure 400 jobs.

Mr Bowen said: "It's a massive loss to Middleton. The workers are absolutely shocked.

"The Stakehill industrial estate is an area where a lot of people have lost their jobs over the last few years from different distribution depots."

Distribution operations will now be moved to Lichfield, in Staffordshire, and Livingston in Scotland.
