Man charged with attempted murder after serious assault - updated

Stephen David Woolfall (born 17/05/81) of Andover Avenue, Alkrington was charged with attempted murder last night, Tuesday 17 July 2007.

This follows an incident early on Saturday morning, 14 July when a Middleton man was found with serious head injuries.

The 49-year-old Alkrington resident was found collapsed at home on The Meadows by his neighbour at around 3.00am.

He remains in a critical condition and on life support in hospital.

Mr Woolfall is due to appear at Rochdale Magistrates' Court later this morning.

A 21-year-old man, also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, remains in police custody for questioning.

A third man was arrested on suspicion of this assault, but has since been released without charge.

UPDATE

A second man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident.

James Edward McGarvey, born November 1986, of The Downes, Alkrington, Middleton has been charged with attempted murder.

He will appear at Rochdale Magistrates' Court tomorrow, Thursday 19 July 2007.
