Celebrating 35 years of community success in Deeplish

Date published: 31 December 2024

On 16 December 2024, Deeplish Community Centre celebrated 35 years of being at the heart of the community with an inspiring event highlighting its history, achievements, and the impactful stories of its people through the launch of the film Deep Dive into Deeplish.

The project aimed to document and share the centre’s history and collective memories through storytelling, art, and performance.

It brought together diverse groups, including founding members, volunteers, staff, and partners, to reflect on 35 years of milestones and achievements.

Hebe Reilley, CEO of Cartwheel Arts, said: “We are proud to have been a longstanding partner over the years and to contribute to the Deep Dive into Deeplish project, which so beautifully captures the stories and spirit of this vibrant community project.”

The event also showcased the artistic and cultural talents of the community. Local poet Seamus Kelly collaborated with residents to create poetry featured on postcards, which were shared during the event. Rubaya Pirzada, a Sufi poet and artist, performed inspiring music that honoured the Centre’s enriched legacy of success, history, and service – a performance that was hugely appreciated by all participants.

Deputy mayor, Councillor Janet Emsley extended her congratulations to the centre, commending its significant contributions to community cohesion and development over the decades.

This initiative, funded by Historic England’s Everyday Heritage Programme, commemorated the Centre’s legacy as a hub of inclusion, empowerment, and engagement since its inception in 1989.

Sohail Ahmad, Operations Manager, reflected on the Centre’s history and the many lives it has touched. He commented: “This celebration was not only a reflection of Deeplish Community Centre’s achievements but also a testament to its commitment to supporting the community, fostering creativity, and building skills and strong partnerships.”

M. Saleem JP, chair of the association, said: “We would like to thank everybody who attended and supported the celebration event and shared their views and experiences to mark this momentous occasion at the centre.”
