Devoted volunteer wins national award for Mosque service

Mohammed Ilyas, a devoted volunteer at Jamia Masjid Bilal in Rochdale, has been honoured with the ‘Best Mosque Volunteer Award’ at the British Beacon Mosque Awards 2024.

The accolade recognises his exceptional commitment, selflessness, and contributions to both the mosque and the wider Rochdale community.

Shaukat Warraich, CEO of Faith Associates, which organises the annual awards, commended Mohammed Ilyas for his remarkable dedication. He said:

“Mohammed Ilyas embodies the true spirit of volunteerism, dedicating his time and energy to supporting his community in meaningful ways.

His work at Jamia Masjid Bilal has been instrumental in bringing people together and ensuring that the mosque remains a beacon of hope and service for all. With over 60,000 votes cast and a rigorous judging process, this award is a testament to his remarkable impact.”

Mohammed Ilyas has been a key figure in ensuring the smooth running of Jamia Masjid Bilal's programmes. 

His efforts include organising community events, supporting charitable initiatives, and fostering a welcoming environment within the mosque. His dedication has inspired many others in Rochdale to engage in volunteerism, strengthening ties within the local community.

The British Beacon Mosque Awards, held annually, celebrate the invaluable contributions of individuals and mosques across the UK. 

These awards highlight the critical role mosques play in fostering inclusivity and unity in society.
