Striking new mural unveiled at Voltalab Sound Studios in Rochdale

Date published: 24 November 2024

A stunning new mural honouring Ian Curtis, the iconic lead singer of Joy Division, has been unveiled outside Voltalab Sound Studios in Rochdale.

The artwork, commissioned by Voltalab and supported by Rochdale Development Agency, commemorates Curtis’s lasting influence on music and culture, and celebrates the iconic track “Atmosphere”, which was recorded in the building.

The mural, created by artist and musician Jack Brett, captures the spirit and essence of Curtis, whose haunting vocals and poetic lyrics continue to inspire generations. The piece is located on the exterior wall of Voltalab Sound Studios, a site with its own storied history in the North West’s vibrant music scene.

Voltalab is housed in the building previously inhabited by Cargo Studios and Suite 16. Cargo Studios holds a special place in the hearts of music fans, having hosted sessions for some of the most influential post-punk and indie bands of the era, including Joy Division.

The location of the mural serves as a nod to Curtis’s connection to the region and the enduring cultural significance of the studio.

Jack Brett, the artist, said: “Joy Division recorded Atmosphere here, which happens to be one of my favourite songs, and using some of the original single artwork I put together this piece.

"I wanted to give an expressive quality to the painting because Ian Curtis moved with such a frenetic energy, and this incredible power in his movements. I wanted to capture some of that angelic, heavenly movement so it's commemorating him and that song. I think the lyrics, especially the lyric Don't Walk Away in Silence, is really poignant.”

It is hoped that the mural will attract visitors from near and far, further cementing Rochdale’s place on the cultural map. Fans and the public are encouraged to visit the mural and reflect on the legacy of Ian Curtis, whose music and artistry transcended boundaries and continues to resonate deeply with audiences worldwide.

Voltalab Sound Studios is a historic recording studio located in Rochdale, UK. It serves as a creative hub for artists and musicians, honouring the legacy of its predecessor, Cargo Studios. Studio owners Jamie Alsop and Laura Howkins are members of the Greater Manchester Music Commission.
