Golden Mosque nominated for national award

Date published: 09 November 2024

The Golden Mosque in Rochdale has been shortlisted for the esteemed Best Run Mosque award in this year’s British Beacon Mosque Awards. Celebrating mosques across the United Kingdom, the awards acknowledge institutions that excel in community service, outreach, and effective management.

Established in 2018 by Faith Associates UK, the British Beacon Mosque Awards recognise mosques that demonstrate outstanding service and commitment to their communities.

This year, the Golden Mosque stands out for its significant contributions in Rochdale, evolving from a historic place of worship into a dynamic centre for education, social support, and community empowerment.

Notable initiatives at the mosque include the Lantern Academy, youth and elderly support programs, environmental and charity projects, and activities focused on empowering women within the community.

Judges for the Best Run Mosque award will assess nominees on management competence, including their ability to organise events and services, work inclusively across communities, share expertise, and maintain approachability and integrity.

The Golden Mosque has been praised for these qualities, making it a strong candidate for the award.

The awards ceremony, scheduled for 23 November 2024 in Greater Manchester, is expected to draw around 500 guests.

The event will reveal the winners across multiple categories, recognising the contributions and resilience of UK mosques.

Faith Associates chief executive and Beacon Mosque Awards director, Shaukat Warraich, highlighted the awards' significance, especially following recent incidents of unrest and attacks targeting mosques.

He said: “Their hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. Following this summer’s riots and attacks against mosques, this year’s Beacon Mosque Awards have an important significance.

"Thousands of people have nominated and voted for their mosque to be recognised. It is essential that we honour the dedication of mosque volunteers and the police who support them.”

This recognition brings a moment of pride to Rochdale, affirming the Golden Mosque’s role as a community leader, supporting all residents in unity and service.
