Zoe Attwood, a 41-year-old resident of Littleborough, recently took on the formidable challenge of The Dramathon, a full-distance marathon that traverses the rugged terrain of the Speyside Way.
The event, which spanned 26.2 miles, began at Glenfarclas distillery and wound its way through various distilleries before concluding at Glenfiddich.
As the chair of LEAF, secretary of Friends of Hare Hill Park, and treasurer of Friends of Littleborough Stations, Zoe is deeply rooted in her community.
She chose to participate in the marathon not only for the thrill of running but also to raise funds for Springhill Hospice, a cause close to her family’s heart.
Despite the typically cool autumn weather, Zoe faced unexpectedly intense heat on race day, adding to the challenge of the course.
Reflecting on the experience, she said: “The scenery was breathtaking, but the route was brutal. Having previously run five other marathons, this was by far the toughest one I’ve ever done.”
The motivation behind her participation was particularly poignant, as Springhill Hospice provided exceptional care to her father-in-law, Robin, during his final weeks. Zoe said: “As a family, we wanted to give something back to Springhill, who provided comfort and security to my father-in-law during his final weeks.”
Zoe highlighted the impact of the hospice’s care, noting, “The same fighting spirit and resilience he demonstrated were matched by the unwavering support and compassion shown by the staff.” With a smile, she remarked on the weather’s unexpected turn: “It was apt that the weather did the opposite of what was forecast.”
Upon completing the challenging marathon, Zoe and her fellow finishers were rewarded with a sustainable medal crafted from a whisky barrel and mounted on a cotton lanyard, along with samples from the distilleries.
Zoe reflected on her motivations for tackling such a demanding marathon, saying, “Springhill Hospice provided care and support to my father-in-law Robin for 41 days in 2024.
"We want to thank the wonderful staff for their kindness and support and help others with life-limiting illnesses have the same opportunity as we did.” She emphasised that running was her chosen way to show appreciation and to support others facing similar challenges.
Explaining her decision to participate in this specific race, Zoe said: “For the sixth marathon I said I wouldn’t do, as I’d given up long-distance running... then I saw The Dramathon, and it fitted perfectly.”
The race coincided with her husband’s birthday, making the event even more significant, particularly as the Highlands is his favourite whisky region.
At the time of publication, Zoe had raised £676 for Springhill Hospice, a sum she hopes will contribute to the comfort and care of future patients and their families.
