Basketball session for people with disabilities launching in November

Date published: 28 October 2024

A new inclusive sports initiative is set to launch in Middleton, providing an exciting opportunity for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. Starting on 6 November, DOSportUK (Disability Opportunity in Sport UK) will offer a weekly basketball session aimed at people aged 10 and over. The sessions will take place every Wednesday from 6-7pm at Hopwood Hall College's Middleton campus.

DOSportUK, a community interest company known for promoting inclusivity in sports, has been making strides since its founding.

The organisation is closely linked with the Special Olympics, with some of its members having competed at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, and many currently aiming for the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Chile.

One of the members, Louise, shared her experience, saying: "I've been doing basketball for about a year and a half now. Beforehand, I'd never played basketball, and I’m improving every day. I want to go to the Olympics in three years. I think it's good for people with disabilities, not just physical but also hidden disabilities. We all fit in together. We might not always talk, but we just have a good laugh and play."

Jacob, founder and managing director of DOSportUK, expressed his enthusiasm for the new initiative. "We’re super excited to bring our inclusive basketball sessions to the Rochdale borough," he said. "Our goal is simple: to ensure everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport. This new session is not just about playing basketball; it’s about building confidence, fostering friendships, and creating a sense of belonging."

The sessions will focus on fun, fitness, and developing basketball skills, welcoming participants of all abilities. Whether newcomers or seasoned players, the programme is designed to cater to a range of skill levels, ensuring everyone feels included and valued.

Jacob highlighted the positive impact of the programme, saying, "We’ve witnessed the transformative power of sport in the lives of our members.

"For many, these sessions are the highlight of their week – a place where they can connect with peers, enjoy themselves, and feel part of a supportive community."

This initiative marks the ninth inclusive basketball session run by DOSportUK across the region. The organisation also operates a “young’uns” session in Manchester for children under 10 keen to get involved in the sport.

In addition to its sports sessions, the company is seeking partnerships with local businesses and volunteers who share their vision of making the borough of Rochdale a more inclusive place.

Businesses and individuals interested in collaborating or volunteering are encouraged to reach out.
