Rochdale woman appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Greater Manchester

Date published: 15 October 2024

A local Rochdale educator has been honoured with a prestigious appointment as one of six new Deputy Lieutenants for Greater Manchester. Rebecca Tarran has been recognised for her outstanding contributions to education and remembrance, particularly through her work at a local school.

The appointment, made by the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Diane Hawkins JP LLB, was formally announced on Thursday (10 October).

Deputy Lieutenants are selected for their significant efforts to enhance the social and cultural fabric of Greater Manchester, and they serve as representatives of His Majesty The King in the region.

Rebecca has spent many years as a dedicated educator, currently serving as director of learning for humanities at a Rochdale school.

Her passion for history, particularly war remembrance, has led her to organise numerous educational trips to sites of historical importance such as Berlin, Ypres, and Normandy.

Through her leadership, students are not only learning about history but also developing a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by Rochdale soldiers during times of war.

One of her most significant achievements is her work with the school's remembrance programme, which has gained national recognition.

She has led efforts to create a remembrance garden at the school and has raised funds for the initiative through her networking and fundraising efforts.

Her dedication to honouring the legacy of those who fought in the wars has earned her a national award from the Institute of Education and affiliation with the Royal British Legion.

She has also had the honour of attending the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

Beyond her professional life, Rebecca Tarran is deeply involved in community work.

She has raised funds for Springhill Hospice and has been an active leader in her parish, coordinating a sacramental programme for local children.

Married with two teenage children, she also enjoys spending time with family and friends, attending concerts, and travelling.

In addition to Rebecca Tarran, five other individuals from across Greater Manchester have been appointed as Deputy Lieutenants, including Professor Malcolm Colin Press CBE from Alderley Edge and Zoe Brimelow from Bury.

The appointment highlights the impact of local leaders in shaping the region and contributing to its ongoing development.
