Local mental health organisation Tackling Minds has been awarded a £19,800 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, furthering its mission to use fishing as a therapeutic tool.
The funding, secured in February, will enable the group to expand its work, supporting individuals facing mental health challenges, addiction recovery, disabilities, and social isolation.
Founded by David Lyons, Tackling Minds has pioneered the use of fishing as part of mental health recovery. The organisation made history as the first to have angling recognised by the NHS, allowing GPs to prescribe fishing as part of mental health care plans.
This innovative approach provides participants with a peaceful environment to reflect, engage, and heal, underlining the significant therapeutic benefits of the activity.
David Lyons’ dedication to mental health support has not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his efforts, he was selected by King Charles as a Coronation Champion, an accolade awarded to just a few out of 5,000 nominees.
David was invited to Buckingham Palace, where he was honoured for his groundbreaking work in using fishing to improve mental well-being.
In addition to royal recognition, Tackling Minds has been involved in the first-ever peer-reviewed scientific research linking fishing to mental health improvements.
The study confirmed what many participants have experienced: fishing can reduce anxiety, boost self-esteem, and create a sense of community.
Speaking about the recent grant, David Lyons said: “We are incredibly grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for their continued support.
"This funding allows us to extend our reach, helping more people experience the mental health benefits of fishing. We’re committed to breaking the stigma around mental health and providing people with a unique, life-changing way to improve their well-being.”
