Date published: 14 October 2024

A 21-year-old man is in hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries after being struck by a tram in Oldham late on Friday night (11 October).

The Rochdale-Oldham line was disrupted as a result of the incident, which occurred at approximately 11.20pm near the Shaw and Crompton Metrolink stop. Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a collision involving a tram and a member of the public.

The man was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Transport services in the area have been severely affected. A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) confirmed that tram services between Rochdale Town Centre and Oldham Mumps were suspended. But that they were re-opened on Sunday lunchtime.

An investigation is now underway by Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

A GMP spokesperson said on Saturday: "Shortly before 11.20pm last night (Friday 11 October 2024) we responded to reports of a collision between a tram and a member of the public on the tram track near to Bullcote Lane, Oldham.

"The member of public, a 21-year-old man, has been taken to hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, where he remains.

"Metrolink services continue to be impacted this morning [Saturday] whilst our Serious Collision Investigation Unit make further enquiries. We appreciate the patience of those who use the service."

Tram services are now operating as normal (Monday 14 October).
