Gardening heroes honoured at community allotment

Date published: 10 October 2024

Two local volunteers, Les Mustill and Nathan Statham, were celebrated as "Gardening Heroes" on Friday (25 September) during a special event at Petrus’ PIER community allotment.

The award, introduced by long-term supporters J Parker's, was designed to acknowledge the tireless contributions of volunteers who have made a significant impact on both the allotment and the wider community.

This year marked the inaugural presentation of the "gardening heroes" award, which will now become an annual tradition to highlight outstanding volunteer efforts.

Les Mustill was honoured for his unwavering commitment to fundraising for PIER, including completing a 13.5-mile sponsored walk earlier in the year. His efforts raised crucial funds for the allotment, demonstrating remarkable determination.

Nathan Statham was recognised for his infectious enthusiasm and leadership at PIER. Known for his creative ideas and motivating presence, Nathan has inspired fellow volunteers, helping to drive the project forward with his energy and vision.

The celebration was not only a moment to recognise Les and Nathan, but also an opportunity to thank the many other volunteers and supporters who have contributed to another successful year at the PIER allotment.

Managed by local homelessness charity Petrus, the allotment plays a vital role in the community by providing nature-based activities that help reduce loneliness and isolation while improving mental health.

Edward Doherty, representing J Parker’s, presented the awards, praising the dedication of the volunteers. He said: "Both Les and Nathan have gone above and beyond in their commitment to the PIER allotment.

"Their passion and hard work embody the spirit of community that we wanted to recognise with this award. We are proud to celebrate them and all the volunteers who make this space so special."

The PIER allotment has become an essential space for many, offering opportunities for local people to connect with nature, participate in meaningful activities, and build lasting friendships.

As the project continues to thrive, it remains an important part of fostering community spirit and enhancing well-being.

Silvana Devine, Petrus’ Wellbeing and Engagement Service Manager, expressed her gratitude, stating: "We love working with the team at J Parker’s because they truly understand the positive impact PIER has on people’s lives. Their support helps our volunteers achieve their goals and aspirations.

"We’re incredibly grateful for everything they do, including recognising our volunteers in this wonderful way."
