Trees cut down in Hare Hill Park on safety grounds

Date published: 21 May 2024

Trees that were being cut down in various parts of Hare Hill Park this morning (21 May) were removed on ‘safety grounds’.

Passers-by were curious after spotting staff from Rochdale Borough Council in the park at around 8.00am, cutting down a horse chestnut tree and some ash trees.

The council said that the chestnut tree had decay in the stem, and eight ash trees were cut down as they were sadly suffering from advanced ash dieback - a disease which causes leaf loss and crown dieback in affected trees, and can ultimately lead to the death of the tree.

The council said: "The trees had to be removed on safety grounds. Additional tree planting will take place in the park later in the year to replace lost trees."
