Full circle for poetry book about Hollingworth Lake

Date published: 25 October 2023

A poetry book about the animals and birds at Hollingworth Lake written by local schoolchildren has raised hundreds of pounds towards a new sensory and wildlife garden and orchard at the beauty spot.

The book was written over 12 months ago by children at St Andrew’s CE Primary School –  who also received a letter from Buckingham Palace, thanking them for the poetry book – and local author Yvonne Weatherhead.

They recently met with the Hollingworth Lake Ranger, Judy Alderson, and presented her with the monies raised from the book sales, plus some additional, to the sum of £385.

Judy said: “We will put the money raised from the poetry book towards a sensory/wildlife garden and orchard at Hollingworth Lake. Fruit trees and plants will provide a great nectar source for all pollinators and we will make bug hotels and have bird feeders close by.”

The rangers and the RSPCA will also be selling further copies of the poetry book to enhance funds to help the protection of wildlife.

The children told Mrs Weatherhead: “Before we studied how to write different types of poetry, we didn't write much poetry. Now we are confident to write in different styles.”

The book was presented to the school in a book launch last school year, but now the book has made its final journey to Hollingworth Lake.

Mrs Weatherhead said: “A spectacular project which produced fabulous poetry about the plants, trees and animals around the stunning Hollingworth Lake, which is on the doorstep to St Andrew's.

“It was also lovely to get recognition for the children's hard work from the Prince and Princess of Wales, in the form of a letter.

“Well done, St Andrew's for your enthusiasm and care for animals and the environment.”

St Andrew’s is continuing to support environmental sustainability through its newly built ecopod, The Birch Room, which was commissioned by the Watergrove Trust.
