Thumper the kitten needs your help to give him a life-changing operation

Date published: 05 October 2023

A kitten with many ‘deformities unseen by most vets’ will be paying a visit to TV’s Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick to undergo an assessment for a prosthetic leg.

Disfigured Thumper, born as a result of inbreeding, has four deformed legs – one of which needs amputating – clubbed front paws, no claws except for three ‘random’ ones, no toe pads and his ears and tail are only half-developed.

He was taken in by Heléna Abrahams, who lives in the grounds of Fairfield Hospital. Heléna is the woman behind the Gizmo’s Legacy campaign – which is pushing for a UK law to ensure that every deceased cat is scanned for a microchip by local authorities.

Heléna previously described Thumper as “the worst case of inbreeding” she had ever seen, saying “he limps because he’s in pain and will need constant monitoring as he grows.”

Now Thumper will be having a consultation and CT scan at Noel Fitzpatrick’s veterinary surgery in Surrey next week to see if it’s possible to replace his leg with a permanent prosthetic.

The consultation on 12 October will cost around £2,000 before additional costs for his operation with Heléna and the Gizmo’s team crowdfunding to cover the costs of the kitten’s life-changing operation. They have set a target of £5,000 in total.

Heléna said: “We have been given the opportunity to seek advice from a specialist vet, who will see if it’s possible to give him a new permanent leg to replace the leg that needs removing.

“He really is a tough little lad and loves nothing more than running around with his sidekick, Smooch, another kitten with an inbred deformity.

“If anyone can donate towards the costs, we will be eternally grateful.”
