Friends and family of Johnny Alfrey raise over £2,700 for Johnny Alfrey Music Memorial

Date published: 06 October 2023

Friends and family of Johnny Alfrey have raised over £2,700 for the charity set up in the talented musician’s name.

23 of Johnny’s friends and family took to Snowdon on 30 September, climbing Wales’ highest mountain in less-than-ideal conditions.

Johnny, 22, of Littleborough, sadly died in June last year after illness caused by heart abnormalities, including a prolonged QTc interval and a T-wave inversion.

A prolonged QTc interval occurs when the heart takes longer than usual to recharge between beats and is a symptom of Long QT Syndrome which can cause fast and abnormal heartbeats, and sudden death, whilst a T-wave inversion can be a sign of heart disease.

His inquest ruled that Johnny would not have died had the abnormalities been acted upon.

Following Johnny’s untimely death, his friends and family set up the Johnny Alfrey Music Memorial not-for-profit organisation, to provide support and space to help young musicians in the music industry. Funds raised will also go towards the annual music festival, of which the first was held in April this year.

Johnny’s dad, Chris Charnley, said: “The conditions weren’t great; it was very wet, windy and cold, but we made it to the summit.

“A big thank you from our family to everyone who has donated and supported our cause.”

At the time of publication, the climb has raised £2,895 of its £5,000 target but the fundraiser link will remain open for anyone wishing to donate:
