Yellow weather alert for wind mid-week
Date published: 25 September 2023
A spell of strong winds is expected
After a settled day for many on Saturday (23 September), the weather is set to turn more unsettled with the potential for more National severe Weather Warnings by mid-week.
With the arrival of Storm Agnes, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across most of England, including the north west and Rochdale, throughout Wednesday (27 September) into Thursday morning (28 September).
Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, Mark Sidaway said: “There is the potential for a deep area of low pressure to bring further heavy rain and disruptive winds on Wednesday and Thursday, but details on timings and the exact location of potential impacts remain uncertain at this far ahead.”
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Steve Ramsdale said: “While the precise track and depth of Storm Agnes is still being determined, there’s a high likelihood of wind gusts around 50 to 60mph for some inland areas.
“As well as some very strong winds for many, Storm Agnes will also bring some heavy rain, with the highest totals more likely in Scotland, northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland.”
Storm Agnes is the first named storm of the storm naming season, which runs from September to August the following year.
