NHS Greater Manchester appeals for real stories of former smokers

Smoking kills up to 2 in 3 smokers and, in Greater Manchester, around 5,700 people die each year from smoking-related illnesses

NHS Greater Manchester is appealing to people in the city-region who have been affected by smoking to share their real life experiences to help warn others.

The NHS will put real stories at the heart of its new campaign later this year, to warn of the dangers of smoking and show the devastating illnesses people live with on a daily basis.

They are hoping to hear from former smokers who have successfully quit smoking due to a smoking-related illness, or from the loved ones of someone who has died as a result of smoking.

Andrea Crossfield, Making Smoking History lead at NHS Greater Manchester, said: “Smoking kills up to 2 in 3 smokers and, in Greater Manchester, around 5,700 people die each year from smoking-related illnesses. It is the single largest cause of preventable illness and early death.

“This is why we’re launching a new campaign to raise awareness of the harmful effects of smoking to help protect our local communities. By telling the real stories of the people who have been affected by smoking – whether it’s their own smoking, or that of a loved one - we hope to reach more people and encourage them to quit. We also want to hear positive stories of those who have quit for their health, wealth and wellbeing.

“It is a brave step to share your experiences with others, but we know that it can have a powerful impact in encouraging others to quit. Sharing your story could be the motivation someone else needs to give quitting another go.
