Older people supported with gentle exercises from Rochdale AFC Community Trust

Date published: 22 September 2023

Rochdale AFC Community Trust's inclusion co-ordinator Liz Cotterill has been leading a series of gentle exercises for older people in extra care schemes and supported housing.

Gentle exercises like walking, stretching, and low-impact aerobics have been proven to play a crucial role in helping older individuals build and maintain muscle strength. This not only boosts their ability to tackle daily activities but also enhances their balance, reducing the risk of falls and related injuries.

Age UK says regular weekly exercise that improves posture, strength and mobility can help restore confidence and skills that are vital to good health and wellbeing, whilst “a good class will also offer older people fun, social contact and a sense of proactively managing their experience of older age.”

Ruth, an inspiring 82-year-old participant, shared her experience: "I broke my arm not long after Liz came to do our exercise class. She encouraged me to do what I could and gave me gentle finger exercises to aid my recovery. My consultant was amazed at my progress, and he believes the exercises have been instrumental in speeding up my healing process and reducing swelling.”

Liz said: “Promoting gentle exercise for older people isn't just about physical health; it's also about fostering social connections and enriching our community. It's an investment in a more inclusive, healthier, and happier society for all generations.”
