Fire at the former Heywood pub

Date published: 08 September 2023

Firefighters spent hours putting out a fire at the site of the former Heywood pub on Tower Street on Thursday morning (7 September).

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene shortly before 7am and spent around seven hours tackling the blaze.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 5am on Thursday 7 September, three fire engines from Bury, Heywood and Rochdale stations were called to reports of a fire at a derelict building on Tower Street, Heywood.

“The fire involved a quantity of timber. Firefighters are using hose reels, jets and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire. GMFRS crews were in attendance for about seven hours.”

The pub, which had been closed for over 18 months, was recently demolished at the start of August, and was previously subject to a fire in March 2022.
