Sun shines on Heywood Charities Fete

Date published: 07 September 2023

Heywood’s Charities Fete on Sunday 3 September was once again a fantastic day out in Queen's Park.

This year saw crowds of people coming into the park for the traditional day-long family occasion. The fairground drew children and parents to enjoy the many colourful rides and stalls.

A full afternoon of live entertainment began on the outdoor stage, starting with the official opening by Rochdale Mayor, Councillor Mike Holly, his wife, Margaret, and council leader Neil Emmott.

The sun shone on another successful year’s fundraising for lots of local charities who set up a large variety of stalls offering lots of fun activities. There was also support from lots of small businesses giving visitors information and a taste of their fine wares.

During the day visitors were entertained by a variety of activities such as the samba band, climbing wall, traditional Punch & Judy, George Formby band and numerous other acts. Roch Valley Radio was live providing music all day.

Crowds of visitors fell in love with the petting area which housed rabbits, tortoises, snakes, a huge lizard walking on a lead, and lots of other tame creatures. In the same area was a stand containing owls of different sizes for visitors to hold.

Ellen Yates, of the Heywood Charities Fete, said: "Thanks go out to Heywood Rotary, Friends of Queens Park, and the Charities Fete committee for all the hard work in organising and running this popular event."
