Date published: 21 August 2023

A Manchester Grammar School pupil from Rochdale is celebrating his examination results and is heading to America to continue his studies.

Hunter achieved 3A* and 1A and is going to Williams College, Massachusetts to study medicine, with biology as a major. Williams College has been ranked as number 1 in the 2022-2023 edition of Best Colleges for National Liberal Arts, and has an undergraduate enrolment of approximately 2,000 each year.

Hunter has had a successful final year at Manchester Grammar as vice-captain, running VetSoc and Politics Society as well as volunteering at a number of local primary schools and delivering assemblies to a wide variety of pupils at the school. Hunter has been heavily involved in other charity work, co-founding Trauma Research UK which provides help and support for those struggling with anxiety disorders. His determination and hard work throughout the year has inspired many other pupils at the school to work with mental health charities.

Pupils at The Manchester Grammar School picked up their results last week and 38% of all grades were at the A* level, 73% of all grades were A* or A, and 87% of grades were A*, A or B. There were many exceptional individual performances. 39 pupils were awarded A* grades in all their subjects, 106 boys achieved a clean sweep of A* and A grades.

Oxford and Cambridge offered places to 30 Manchester Grammar School pupils in 2023. Other leading universities to which MGS boys will be heading this autumn include Imperial, UCL, LSE, Durham, Warwick, York, KCL, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Leeds.

The school’s High Master, Dr Martin Boulton, said: "This year’s results places The Manchester Grammar School in a very select number of schools nationally. I am absolutely delighted that the hard work and dedication of the pupils has been rewarded with excellent grades and that this will enable them to move on to study a diverse range of courses at leading universities. I would like to wish them every success as they take their next exciting steps in their academic journeys."
