GP Patient Survey 2023: How does yours shape up?

Date published: 04 August 2023

The results from the annual GP Patient Survey have been published, detailing patients’ experience of their local GP practice and other local NHS services.

The survey asks about patients’ local GP services (including use of online services, awareness and satisfaction with opening times and preferred GPs), experience of making an appointment, the quality of care at their last appointment, overall experience of their GP practice, experience when their GP practice is closed and NHS dentistry as well as current health status.

We've looked at the data at a Primary Care Network (PCN) level – Rochdale North, Heywood, Middleton and Pennines – and across three areas: overall experience, ease of getting through on the phone, and how many people always got to see or speak to their preferred GP when they wanted to.

We’ve then broken these figures down by local practice so you can see the three key figures for your doctors' surgery.

Overall, patients under Heywood and Pennine PCNs were happier with their GP experience than the national average of 71%: 87% of patients in the Pennines and 74% in Heywood said they were happy, whilst the same was true of 67% of patients in Middleton and just 61% in Rochdale.

Nationally, just 50% of people said they found it easy to get through on the phone. In Rochdale, just 29% of people said they found it easy, as did 33% of people in Middleton. In Heywood, this was true of 56%, rising to 68% in the Pennines.

Finally, just 35% of people nationally said they were always able to see their preferred GP when they wanted to. This was highest locally in the Pennines (50%), then Middleton (37%), Heywood (27%) and Rochdale (25%).
