Green Team revitalizes derelict area at Moss Row Independent Living Scheme

Date published: 31 July 2023

A neglected area of land has been given a new lease of life at Moss Row Independent Living Scheme giving residents a new patio area to sit out and enjoy the sun.

The transformative work was carried out by The Green Team following suggestions made by residents of the Independent Living Scheme and is a follow on to three previous Green Team projects.

Following consultation, a redundant space in poor condition between the bungalows has received a sizeable block paved patio area which is flanked by two “L” shaped timber raised planters alongside the installation of two fixed timber tables and seating. The area is intended for use by all residents of the scheme and is a stunning place to sit out as it is a real “sun trap”. The scheme is the second one to be completed by the 2023 intake of three apprentices who are being trained in this area by their supervisor, Phil Cocker.

The Green Team project is funded by RBH and is a longstanding partnership between the organisation and Groundwork Greater Manchester (GGM). The project involves the recruitment of local apprentices every two years to carry out environmental improvement schemes that are referred by RBH. The individual projects are proposed by officers which are often at the request of tenants and residents. Since the inception of the Green Team back in 2009, there have been over 100 apprentices that have benefitted and more than 300 individual environmental schemes have now been completed.

Paul Dockerty, RBH environmental and cyclical manager said: “Although the apprentices were all new to this area of work, they have now set the bar very high for the future scheme they carry out. Here, they have expertly installed a high-quality facility that will be enjoyed by residents for years to come.”

Scheme manager, Lorraine Burrow said: “They have done a fantastic job they were very professional and very friendly. The tenants are all very pleased with it and are looking forward to using it when we have some nice weather.”

Ken Griffin, resident said: “The new facility has transformed my life. It is lovely and now I can sit out there, even eating my breakfast there when it’s dry. Lots of local people passing by have also told me how lovely the new area looks.”
