Two men arrested on suspicion of assault after man injured in Alkrington

Date published: 10 May 2023

Two men were arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was injured in Alkrington on Saturday (6 May).

Police were called to The Heath on Saturday afternoon to reports of disorder, in which a man had been injured.

He sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and the ambulance service took him to hospital for treatment.

Two men were detained at the scene on suspicion of assault and remain in custody for questioning.

The incident comes just days after a ‘disturbance’ on The Moss, which saw a man taken to hospital with injuries to his arms, legs and back. Rochdale Online understands that incident is not being treated as a stabbing.

Following both incidents, a bleed control kit has been ordered for The Downs Shopping Parade in Alkrington.

The 24/7 access key coded kit – which includes pressure dressings, gauze bandages and tourniquets – follows one installed in Middleton town centre last year.

In order to help increase chances of survival following significant blood loss, the kits are designed to prevent stab-related deaths in the same way public defibrillators have been credited with a drop in heart attack deaths.

Much like a defibrillator, the kits are registered with the emergency services and access provided via a 999 operator. None of the medical devices in the emergency bleed control kit require training to use and the 999 operator will be able to talk the user through the process.

Instructions are also included inside the cabinet.

Ward councillor Dylan Williams has reassured residents after the incidents, and a multi-agency meeting has been set up with fellow East Middleton councillor Terry Smith, the council, the police and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.

In a statement, Councillor Williams said: “I completely understand that a lot of residents in Alkrington are feeling very anxious at the moment due to the disturbing levels of violence seen on the Alkrington Moss Estate in the last week.

“I have had a number of messages from various residents saying that they do not feel safe due to this and what’s most upsetting and disturbing is that children and adults have had to walk through pavements covered in blood from one of the first incidents this week.

“No child should have to witness such things when they are playing.

“I am thankful that we have not seen any fatalities this week and that both victims are in hospital recovering from both separate incidents. I wish them a speedy recovery.”

He continued: “I know a lot of residents are understandably very concerned at the moment on the estate and want to see some action.

“Councillor Smith and I have also asked for a meeting with RBH and police for residents on the estate to discuss these ongoing issues and voice their concerns.

“I share your concerns that if action is not taken to improve things now, the issues on the estate will just become worse and could risk getting a reputation that would be unrecoverable. We cannot let this happen.

“Spending lots of time on the estate the past few weeks has shown me that there is still a big issue with unreported crime. Smashed windows, paint thrown at doors, graffiti in communal blocks and broken communal doors. This is not acceptable and should not be the norm.”

The two Labour councillors are also calling for a Crimestoppers Anonymous Campaign and a special lettings policy for the estate to “better vet new tenants until things improve” due to issues with anti-social behaviour in the area.

Councillor Williams concluded: “There are a lot of good people who live on the estate and there are also some fantastic businesses on The Downs shops.

“Terry and I will not give up fighting for things to improve and we want to see action now for residents.

“As soon as we get a date and time set up for a residents’ meeting, I will let you all know.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident on The Health and anyone with any information is asked to contact GMP via 101 or through the Live Chat function on the website www.gmp.police.uk.

Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity - Crimestoppers - on 0800 555 111.
