Rochdale Exchange Market to reopen after a decade

The Rochdale Exchange shopping centre has announced the long-anticipated reopening of its market, marking a major milestone for the town.

After a decade without a permanent home, the market is set to return under the new brand, Pioneers Market, paying tribute to Rochdale’s historical role in the cooperative movement.

Since 2014, when the struggling market vacated the shopping centre, it has been relocated multiple times, eventually finding stability as an outdoor market on The Butts.

 

 

However, with the recent purchase of Rochdale Exchange by the Adhan Group just over a year ago, reviving the market space became a key priority.

“A successful town centre always has a good-quality market within it, as we can see with our neighbouring towns and The Mall Blackburn, which has a thriving market,” said a spokesperson from the Adhan Group.

Over the past few months, extensive refurbishment has been carried out, including updated décor, electrical improvements, and compliance work. The project is now in its final stages, with completion expected by the end of January 2025.

The Pioneers Market will celebrate Rochdale’s rich cooperative heritage, incorporating the names of the original Rochdale Pioneers throughout its stalls, including that of the first female Pioneer, Eliza Brierley. Informational boards will also be installed around the centre, educating visitors about the Pioneers and their global impact.

Working in conjunction with the existing outdoor market on The Butts, the new market will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, offering a comprehensive shopping experience.

With space for nearly 80 stalls, as well as small starter shops around the perimeter, the market aims to attract traders providing both essential goods and unique artisan products to help it stand out from others in the region.

 

 

With significant investment from the Adhan Group, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of growth for Rochdale Exchange. Last year saw several long-vacant retail units filled, and the market’s return is expected to further revitalise the town’s retail landscape.
