Fundraiser for cat's medical bills

Date published: 28 March 2023

A fundraiser has been launched to cover medical costs for a cat who has been receiving extensive care at Newhey cat sanctuary Bart’s Legacy.

Marshall came to Bart’s in October after he was found living in a shed. He had been left behind after his owners moved.

Marshall was trapped by a cat rescuer and taken straight to Armac emergency vets in Bury. He had a really bad wound on his left shoulder which stretched under his armpit.

Since the long-haired black and white tuxedo cat became a resident at Bart’s, he has had regular visits to Briar Dawn vets, having his wound cleaned and flushed.

Despite vets’ efforts, the wound wouldn't heal, and kept becoming reinfected before Marshall developed MRSA.

After deciding to seek outside help, the Liverpool Veterinary Teaching Centre has agreed to take on Marshall’s case to treat him.

However, the initial assessment will cost between £2,000 and £3,000; with treatment, costs are expected to reach around £6,500.

His first appointment will take place on 13 April.

Sue Hancox, who runs Bart’s, says Marshall will need blood tests, a CT scan and swabs.

She said: “Vets initially deemed Marshall to be feral due to him lashing out, but he was just a very, very scared lad.

“As soon as Marshall knew he was safe, he became a snugglebum.

“He is only around three to five years old, without this treatment, this beautiful young life may be cut short.

“Over the last four months my vets have battled to get this wound to heal, and every time the outer layer healed, the skin just broke down and the wound reopened.

“They have measured the depth of the wound and it is 10 centimetres deep.

“During this time he has battled infection after infection: we get rid of one, for another to appear.

“Because of the constant reinfection, Liverpool are going to do a CT scan as there may be a foreign body embedded deep down as we don't know what caused Marshall's wound.

“I see fund raisers for cute kittens, ‘pretty’ cats, etc., I see fund raisers by large rescues/sanctuaries and they hit their targets quite quickly, but for some reason, Marshall’s fundraiser is really struggling.

“Donations can be made either to the Just Giving Page, PayPal using the friends and family option please, or bank transfer.

“We can’t give up on this lad; he’s come such a long way.”
