Rochdale Council of Mosques raise awareness of Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week

Date published: 09 February 2023

The Rochdale Council of Mosques held a seminar on hate crime at Castlemere Community Centre on Monday 6 February for Greater Manchester Hate Crime Awareness Week.

The session involved raising awareness of what hate is, the different types of hate crimes and hate incidents, how prejudice can lead to violence, and the effect it has on individuals and communities.

Nadeem Mir QPM from the Rochdale Council of Mosques presented hate crime figures from across Greater Manchester. The figures showed a 44% increase in recorded hate crime between the period 2021 and 2022.

The Pakeeza women’s group then discussed the importance of reporting such incidents and practical steps on how to keep themselves safe.

Throughout GM Hate Crime Awareness Week, the Rochdale Council of Mosques has distributed practical information and raised awareness of the debilitating effect this type of crime has if not tackled at source.

Nadeem said: “Tackling hate crime is a partnership priority. If not tackled immediately the victim suffers secondary victimisation, which leads to a loss of confidence in the police. It is important that we all play our part in reducing this type of crime and not become an inactive bystander.”

Hate crime comes in lots of forms, but no matter what it is you've experienced, you should report it. You can report it to the police via 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency), online, or at an independent hate crime reporting centre such as True Vision or independent charity CrimeStoppers (0800 555 111)
