A healthy New Year with store cupboard food

Date published: 16 January 2023

Action Together Rochdale, Community Warehouse and Speaking of Food CIC have partnered up to develop recipe cards and packs to support the work of the Community Warehouse.

The Community Warehouse was developed two years ago to support food security in Rochdale and helps distribute food to local foodbanks, pantries, food clubs and other voluntary and community organisations who are supporting people in the borough with emergency food.

The recipe packs which have been developed include Pasta Mediterranean, Homemade Noodle Pots, and U Can 4 Can chilli and include the recipe and all the ingredients you need to cook the recipe.

Julie Durrant who manages the Community Warehouse is delighted to share the recipes and hopes that people will benefit from the packs. She said: "For the last 2 years we have handed out thousands of ambient products and many groups have wanted some ideas for cooking healthy options using nothing but store cupboard items. Some people don’t have a working oven so these recipes can all be done just on the hob."

Linda Convery from Speaking of Food CIC, who is a registered dietitian, was part of the project and helped to develop the recipes. She said: "The recipes showcase that even with basic ingredients, limited fuel, time, cooking skills and equipment you can still make a delicious balanced meal."

The Food Solution Network is made up of a collaboration of groups working together to tackle food security for families and individuals who are struggling to afford food and experiencing the stigma around food poverty and to provide access to appropriate food across Rochdale.
