Christmas cards sent by schoolchildren to care home residents

Date published: 26 December 2022

For the third consecutive year 300 local care home residents have been delighted to receive co-operative Christmas cards from hundreds of local primary school children.

Brought together by the Co-operative's Member Pioneer, Jenny Allen, this year’s Christmas card was designed by Belfield Art Group (BAG) and printed with support from the Co-op store in Milnrow.

Schoolchildren at Belfield Primary, Milnrow Parish Primary and Buckstones Primary School have been busy throughout December colouring and writing their special Christmas cards to individuals at The Willows, Belvoir, Lakeside and Shawside care homes.

The last cards were delivered on 21 December and have brought lots of joy to local residents.

Cathryn, a teacher at Milnrow Parish Primary School, said: "Our children have thoroughly enjoyed colouring and writing Christmas cards for others within our local community. This act of kindness allowed our children to think of others, understand the value of community and consider the wellbeing of those who receive the cards. As a school, we pride ourselves on developing a sense of community and showing love towards others, so this has been the perfect opportunity."

Belfield Art Group (BAG), who have been a Co-op local cause, receive funds to support their vital community work which brings people together through weekly art sessions.

Neil from BAG added: "It’s wonderful being part of this community Christmas project that brings two generations closer together in a really simple way."

The residents have also received their own beautifully designed cards to craft and send on to loved ones.
