Kitten cruelly tied up in two bags and dumped in a bin is saved by refuse worker

A kitten has used up one of his nine lives after being found cruelly tied up in two bags before being dumped in a bin on one of the coldest days of the year.

The black kitten – who is thought to be around five months old – was brought into the RSPCA Redcross Street Animal Centre in Rochdale on Saturday 17 December after being found by a refuse worker.

After hearing meowing, the unnamed worker and his team followed the sound to a bin – whereupon they discovered the kitten tied in two bin bags.

Heather Robinson, animal care assistant at the Rochdale and District RSPCA, said: “He would have had no chance of escape, had the refuse team not heard him crying.

“In this instance, he’s a very lucky little cat.”

Upon arriving at the RSPCA centre, the kitten – now named Albert by the team – was understandably distressed and overwhelmed, but quickly settled into one of the cat pods with a comfy bed and some food.

 

 

Heather continued: “If we fast forward now, to a few days after his admission, he is doing really well.

“He is active, playful and vocal and he loves people. As soon as we enter his pen, he purrs away and laps up all of the fuss so it’s lovely to know he hasn’t lost trust in humans after his ordeal.

“He will see our vet for a health check and be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before then going up for homing via the RSPCA ‘find a pet’ website in the new year and we are sure he will easily find a home. 

“Sadly, due to the cost-of-living crisis, charities like ourselves and many others are seeing an increase in the need for owners to have to rehome their pets due to not being able to afford to keep them anymore. There is also a rise in cases like Albert’s where animals are being abandoned and dumped in awful circumstances. 

“There are many rescues in and around the Rochdale area who are inundated with animals that they are trying to help, however if anyone finds themselves in a position where they need to rehome their pet, then we would advise contacting rescues and charities directly for advice. This will then hopefully help to reduce any more animals ending up in a situation like Albert’s. 

“All rescues and charities are busy, but they are always there for help and advice if and when you need them.”

With Albert’s arrival came the need for donations of wet kitten food – and after an online appeal, the Rochdale RSPCA, which is self-funded, has received ample donations.

 

 

“Over the weekend we received lots of donations of food, toys and money from so many kind people across Rochdale. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time out to help us.

“We couldn’t continue the work that we do without your support and you have made lots of animals very, very happy just in time for Christmas.

“The staff have also been in complete awe at the number of people offering their support in what has been a difficult year for everyone given the cost-of-living crisis,” Heather added.

If anyone would like to donate anything for Albert and the RSPCA’s other animals, then they are more than welcome to bring it to the centre in Rochdale (1 Redcross Street, OL12 0NZ) between 11.30am and 3.30pm, on any day (excluding Wednesdays).
