New dance studio wins big at tournament

Date published: 06 December 2022

Kirby Dance Studio has achieved first place in a number of different categories in a dance tournament after opening its doors in June.

Formerly known as JD dance studios, the Primrose Street venue transformed into Kirby Dance Studio after one of the regular dancers was given the opportunity to carry on the school’s legacy when it faced closure.

David Kirby, owner of Kirby, said: “I used to dance at JD Dance Club and one day during lockdown, the owner didn’t want to do it anymore. I was given the chance to take over and keep the place alive.

“It was a big struggle to find somewhere to put the new studio but we found an empty building and converted it into a dance studio.

“A lot of the dancers have stayed with me as we’ve changed into what we are today and now we have dancers from the age of three and some of our oldest dancers are eighty years of age.”

The school participated in the Iconic Street dance tournament over the last weekend of November where a number of their dancers achieved first place.
