Award-winning social enterprise secures support to continue 'canal odyssey'

Date published: 11 October 2022

An award-winning social enterprise which works to reduce social isolation and loneliness amongst older people has been granted funding to continue its canal walks.

Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Circle has been granted funding from Canal & River Trust to continue its canal odyssey, after members have been walking the length of the Rochdale Canal in small sections.

The most recent walk took the group from Mills Hill to Newton Heath, with the final section on 27 October taking them from Newton Heath to Deansgate/Castlefield.

Once completed they will have walked the 32-mile length of the Rochdale Canal, starting at Sowerby Bridge and finishing at Duke’s Lock, the 92nd lock along the Rochdale Canal.

HMR Circle director Mark Wynn said: “We will be continuing our canal walks, this time taking in the Ashton Canal, the Huddersfield Narrow & Broad Canals as well as the Calder & Hebble Navigation.

“Thanks to the support from the Canal & River Trust we will be able to support walkers with travel, refreshments and equipment such as waterproofs.

“As well as our canal walks, we have our regular walks and strolls across all of our Circles.”

If you want to book on one or all of the walks please contact Circle on 0800 112 3440 or email hello@hmrcircle.org.uk.
