Keep warm this winter, get down to the People’s Living Room in Heywood

Date published: 14 October 2022

Heywood social enterprise PossAbilities is throwing open its doors to anyone in Heywood who wants to switch off their heating for a few hours and keep warm in great company.

A section of PossAbilities Social Lounge – a drop in café for people with learning disabilities at the Cherwell Wellbeing Hub – has been made over into The People’s Living Room.

Aimed primarily at people over 55, The People’s Living Room is a place where you can keep warm, get a cup of tea and a hot meal at affordable prices and meet other people.

Rachel Law, Chief Executive of PossAbilities, said: “It’s going to be a hard and expensive winter with the cost of fuel bills and the high inflation. We keep our heating on all day and are happy to welcome local people who can turn their heating off for a few hours.

“We’ve got a vibrant place here, with people with learning disabilities who are great fun to be around. There’s also a chance for people that want to get involved in what we do to become volunteers. Though that’s not the point. Just show up and we will give you a People’s Living Room access card, so that you can come in and keep warm whenever you want to. There’s no charge."

People can come down and just keep warm if they want to.”

She added: “We are also building a giant teepee which can accommodate 32 people, so after Christmas, we will be able to make that part of The People’s Living Room as well. That should be fun.”

The People’s Living Room is open Monday to Fridays 10am - 4pm at PossAbilities Cherwell Wellbeing Hub, Cherwell Avenue, Heywood OL10 4SY.

To use The People’s Living Room, you can get an Access Card by calling 01706 692181 or by emailing jayne.mills@possabilities.org.uk.
