Canal towpath repaired by volunteers

Date published: 28 September 2022

Part of the canal towpath at Well I' Th' Lane in Rochdale has been repaired by Canal and River Trust volunteers.

Five volunteers repaired a damaged washwall and replaced missing setts on 21 September.

The volunteers installed concrete bags to build up the washwall before capping it with coping stones and concreting in replacement setts.

Lead volunteer Tommy Higson said: “We undertake various repair jobs on our canals across the north west region, with towpaths and washwalls being one of the jobs.

“If we left this unattended it would gradually wear away, which would cause the rest of the washwalls to collapse and eventually the towpath would collapse away over time.

“Volunteers support us with these repair jobs by giving their time to do so. We appreciate and value our volunteers for their continuous hard work and great teamwork.”
