One week left on final consultation for Broadfield Park Slopes

Date published: 13 September 2022

A final consultation on the future of the Broadfield Park Slopes at the back of the town hall will close on Monday 19 September.

Many of the trees on the slopes were removed earlier this year after work uncovered major faults in the Georgian drainage system underneath. Work to improve the drainage was set to take place as part of the wider multi-million pound restoration of the town hall, which is being funded by the council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

But when site contractors got below ground they picked up wider issues, which experts traced back to the slopes, the roots of the many self-seeded trees in the area had also caused further damage and a number of the trees removed were also diseased.

Now the council wants to hear what residents would like to see going forward, and how the area can be transformed into a “safe and welcoming community space whilst maintaining environmental sustainability.”

It has reiterated its pledge to replace the felled trees twofold.

Suggestions for the area include two grassed lawns next to Packer Spout and a water cascade, plus improved lighting and safety.
