Cartwheel Arts has been awarded £20,000 in funding from The Garfield Weston Foundation to help the charity continue delivering Art for a Reason, its programme of high quality participatory arts projects delivered to generate social change.

Cartwheel Arts works with communities of all shapes and sizes bring them exciting, colourful arts projects.

Participation and collaboration are key to the work they carry out, developing confidence and skill and building stronger communities with a positive self-image.

Cartwheel is keen to continue to engage under-represented communities with high-quality creative and cultural experiences, but also deepen that engagement and raise the profile of its activities.

Working class people, racially diverse communities and people with disabilities are under-represented in art colleges, galleries and concert halls. Cartwheel believes everyone deserves the opportunity to be creative. This support from the Garfield Weston Foundation will encourage people to discover their talent, engage in diverse cultural experiences and believe in themselves.

The Garfield Weston Foundation supports charities doing valuable work across the UK, including those which nurture and enhance the nation’s cultural life.

Hebe Reilly, Cartwheel Arts Director, said: “We’re incredibly pleased to receive this funding. All the work Cartwheel delivers takes place in areas of high deprivation or with people confronting issues which significantly limit their quality of life.

“Many of these neighbourhoods we work in have been identified as ‘left behind’ places where residents are at increased risk of unemployment, living in poverty, lower education achievement and aspirations and poor health. So funding like this can makes a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

“We work with all ages from our regular early years sessions with toddlers right up to older people in care homes.”

Established over 60 years ago in 1958, the Garfield Weston Foundation is a family-founded grant-making charity which supports causes across the UK. It has donated over £1billion to charities since it was established and in the last financial year gave over £88million to charities large and small across the country. .
