Norden knitters raise over £14,000 for children's cancer charity

Date published: 20 August 2022

A knitting group in Norden has raised over £14,000 for the charity Children with Cancer UK.

‘Charity Knits x’ was set up in 2015 in memory of Kelly Chatfield’s great-grandmother Edna, who had been a keen knitter.

Edna had supported the charity for a number of years before she died in 2014 at the age of 98.

After her death, her daughter Jean Jones and granddaughter Samantha Chatfield decided to continue knitting and support the same charity in Edna’s memory.

Now joined by family friends Bernie and Geraldine Clitheroe, the small group – which aimed to raise £1,000 – has raised an impressive £14,000 for the children's charity with their creations, including clothes for babies and toddlers and toys.

Children with Cancer UK is a national children's charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer.

Charity Knits x has had numerous displays within the local library and hairdressers in Norden have also supported the organisation.

Kelly, who deals with the admin side of things, said: “My stepmum Samantha and grandma Jean work so hard, and Bernie and Geraldine also deserve recognition for what they are all doing and have been doing. We also knit to order and do what we can to help our supporters.

“This is something that my family and I have loved doing for the number of years and hope to continue. Throughout lockdown, we knitted hundreds of our lockdown bunnies which all included a hand stitched rainbow on their dresses and clothes.

“We also hand knitted nurse and doctor bunnies too. The reviews and comments we received were amazing and very rewarding.”

Charity Knits x purchases all their wool independently, with the only charge applied for postage. Money from item sales goes to Children with Cancer, and the group also has a Just Giving page for donations.
