Rochdale prostate cancer patient tells of pride in his son-in-law who pulled on a Macmillan 10k T-shirt in his honour

Rochdale prostate cancer patient Malcolm Murray has spoken of his pride in his son-in-law who pulled on a Macmillan Cancer Support T-shirt bearing Malcolm’s name to run 10k in his honour.

Malcolm, 70, from Norden said he was incredibly touched when son-in-law Dave Monument decided to run the Thame 10k in Oxfordshire to raise funds for the cancer charity in thanks for everything the team at Oldham Royal Hospital had done for Malcolm.

The retired chartered surveyor had been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer on New Year's Eve, 2018.

He underwent two series of chemotherapy and some radiotherapy, but had to stall treatment because of complications and side-effects.

Malcolm, a father-of-two and grandad who lives with wife Sandie, received advice and support from the team at the Macmillan Information and Support Centre at Royal Oldham Hospital.

It was their kindness that inspired Dave to run for Macmillan and to iron on letters spelling out ‘Malc’ on his Macmillan T-shirt.

Dave who is married to one of Malcolm and Sandie’s daughters and lives in Oxfordshire, has raised £790 so far. Donate here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/dave-monument1

Dave said: "Initially a friend who I play 5-side with challenged me to the 10k. I decided during the training that instead of racing against him I would focus all my efforts into raising some money for Macmillan as they have been fantastic in the care and help for Malcolm.

"I created the just giving page and set a target of £250 which was smashed in a couple of hours, so I increased it to £500. The current total is £790 which has surpassed my total and I’m just blown away with people's generosity."
