Are gambling problems affecting you or someone you care about? Support is available says Citizens Advice Rochdale

Almost half the population of Britain gambles, and there are around 2 million people in Britain who are currently experiencing the effects of gambling harm.

Most worryingly, there are approximately 55,000 children problem gamblers, with millions more at risk of harm as a result of someone else's gambling.

Citizens Advice Rochdale offers a safe space for Rochdale residents to talk about gambling problems. The charity provides wraparound advice and support, and can guide to specialist support services where needed.

What is gambling?

You're gambling if you take a risk of losing money, or belongings, based on chance.

Lotteries, bingo, arcades, gaming machines, sports bets, casinos, crypto or currency trading are all forms of gambling and can cause problems. Online gaming can also include gambling and can be aimed at children with ‘in-game’ purchases becoming increasingly common.

Lots of gambling seems very normal and is really easy to access. 

Citizens Advice Rochdale says that many people may struggle to talk about their gambling, might not realise that they are gambling, or don’t realise that their problems are linked to gambling.

Steve Hughes, Chief Operating Officer at Citizens Advice Rochdale, said: “A gambling problem can mean there isn't enough money to pay for rent, bills and food. It can mean running up credit card bills and other debts. It can mean relationships breaking down, job losses and homelessness.

“These problems don't just affect the person who is gambling. They can affect their family, friends and people they work with. 

“We provide a safe space for you to talk about your issues and access support, whoever you are.

“Whether you need support with your own gambling, or you want to help someone else, we're here for you with free, confidential support, so please contact our friendly support team.”
