Oldham woman to climb Snowdon in memory of Rochdale mum

Date published: 28 April 2022

An Oldham woman will be climbing Snowdon next month in memory of her Rochdale mum, who died of a brain tumour in March 2019.

Natalie Power and her partner Phil, both of Royton, will be climbing Snowdon via the Crib Goch route on either 12 or 13 May in Karen Holt’s memory.

Karen worked as an F&F manager at the Rochdale Tesco after working at Wincanton at Stakehill Industrial Estate.

She lived in Rochdale in her later years, most recently in Castleton until her death at the age of 60 due to a glioblastoma grade 4 brain tumour.

Natalie and Phil hope to raise as much money and awareness as possible for the Brain Tumour Charity, the world's leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of brain tumour research.

Natalie said: “Currently, there is only 2% of NHS funding for cancer research is allocated to brain tumours so without vital funds being raised elsewhere for charities like this one there can be no further research.

“This means that many patients receiving a brain tumour diagnosis will be receiving a terminal diagnosis too, and this was the case for my mam.

“She was given 14 months and given standard treatment of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This was to stabilise the tumour and give her as long as possible.

“My hope is that I can raise some money to go towards vital research in finding a cure so no other families and patients have to go through the devastating effect and ultimate loss that this disease causes.

“My mam Karen was only 60 when we lost her and had her time on earth cut short when she still had so much life left to live. Anybody who has lost a loved one of any kind to a brain tumour will know just how cruel and ruthless this disease is.”

Natalie has also started a Change.org petition to try and increase the amount of NHS funding for brain tumours.

Donations can be made via JustGiving.
