Burger challenge raises over £1,000 for CALM

Date published: 12 April 2022

An epic burger challenge has raised over £1,000 for a men’s mental health charity.

Over 20 diners tackled a 32-ounce burger each – plus sides – at Heroes Burgers in Rochdale town centre on Saturday 2 April.

Their efforts saw £1,200 raised for CALM, Campaign Against Living Miserably, which provides support for anyone in need to prevent suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and the cause of 18 deaths every day.

The burger challenge came as the finale to restaurant owner Darren Rushton’s latest charity challenge, which saw him carry 8 kilos’ worth of weight around for an entire month.

The weight challenge typically sees people cuffing a 3kg medicine ball on their wrist for seven days to portray the burden that poor mental health can be – with Darren upping the ante.

He said: "It was a fantastic turn out. Nobody completed it after giving it the big one! Thank you to Cryers Butchers for providing the burgers and bacon, Co-op Milnrow for the cobs and AJ Off License for the gifts too. And thank you to the staff; they were great."
