Whitworth lighting a beacon for the Queen’s Jubilee

Date published: 13 March 2022

Whitworth Town Council will light a beacon on Brown Wardle hill to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this summer.

The beacon will be one of over 1,500 across the country which will be lit at 9.45pm on Thursday 2 June, marking 70 years of sovereignty by Queen Elizabeth II.

This will be the first time any serving monarch has reached this landmark, as the Queen overtook her great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for almost 64 years until 1901.

Thousands of town criers, along with Pearly Kings and Queens, traditional and Northumberland pipers, buglers and choirs from communities across the four corners of the nation and the Commonwealth will lift up their voices and play and sing specially commissioned music prior to the lighting of the beacons.

An additional day's bank holiday has been added on Friday 3 June 2022 to celebrate the impact the 95-year-old ruler has had on the UK and the world since she ascended the throne in 1952.

The late May Spring bank holiday will also be moved to Thursday 2 June to create a four-day weekend.
