Fundraisers for family affected by Smallbridge house fire

Date published: 23 February 2022

A number of charity events have been organised to raise money for the family of a woman whose house caught fire in Smallbridge last week.

Named locally as Cathy Carberry, the 49-year-old is currently in hospital after inhaling smoke from the fire at her home on the morning of Saturday 19 February.

Neighbours and passers-by helped the family escape the fire before firefighters attended the scene on Wesley Close where the two-storey property was ablaze.

Cathy was set to take part in a group walk from Sowerby Bridge to the Bulls Head in Ogden on Saturday 26 February to raise money for Asthma UK, but proceeds from that event will now be split between the charity and Cathy’s family.

The walk was in memory of Cathy’s daughter Shannon, eight, who sadly died on 26 February 2004 due to an asthma attack.

There will be a further benefit at the Bulls Head on the evening of the 26th, while the Greengate pub in Smallbridge will also host a fundraising event the following day. Empire in Rochdale will also hold a benefit on Sunday 6 March to raise money for Cathy and her family to replace their possessions.

A crowdfunding appeal to raise £2,000 for the family has also been set up on JustGiving:
