Raising awareness of hate crimes at Deeplish Community Centre

Date published: 17 February 2022

A well-attended conference raising awareness of hate crimes took place at Deeplish Community Centre on 8 February.

Police and other partners explained the importance of community safety, their partnership work, and how to support and protect people. They also presented detailed information about reporting hate crimes and tackling zero tolerance, using examples of how such crimes are dealt with.

The event was delivered in partnership with GMP, the council and MSV Housing Association, and opened by Charlie Norman, CEO of MSV, and Sohail Ahmad JP, operations manager of Deeplish Community Centre.

Speakers included Imam Syed Asad Ali from UKIM, Neeli Mosque, who addressed the importance of faith and community safety; Emma Salloway from the council’s community safety team, who spoke about training delivered to local volunteers to support hate crime reporting centres; and Nigel Goulding, who provided goodie bags.

Ms Norman acknowledged the importance of social housing provisions and partnership work with local voluntary organisations. She also described how this partnership has delivered many local projects and still connected with tenants and residents.

She thanked all participants, speakers and organisations for helping to raise awareness of hate crimes.
