Prime Minister visits Hopwood Hall College

Date published: 04 February 2022

Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Hopwood Hall College in Middleton on Thursday (3 February) as part of the launch of the Levelling Up White Paper.

The Prime Minister – along with Member of Parliament for Heywood and Middleton, Chris Clarkson – were greeted by staff and students before heading over to the state-of-the-art Technology Centre.

At 6,500sq-metres, it’s here where learners complete courses such as engineering, manufacturing and construction.

Those who were in lessons at the time were able to demonstrate just what they’re capable of to the leader of the country – who also rolled up his sleeves to get involved.

Impressed by the skillsets around him, the PM posed for selfies with learners before further exploring the facilities.

He ventured into workshops that are used by people studying everything from T-Levels and BTECs to part-time courses and Higher Education.

Afterwards the Prime Minister made his way over to the college’s wildlife enclosures.

He then got to see some of the exotic creatures cared for by those who study Animal Management at Hopwood, including the likes of flamingos and wallabies.

Julia Heap, Principal and CEO of Hopwood Hall College and University Centre, said: “We’re delighted that our students had the opportunity to show the Prime Minister just how much talent we have in our community.

“It really was a unique experience for all those learners who work so hard to perfect their craft in our Technology Centre.

“They clearly caught the PM’s attention – and he had every reason to be impressed by what he witnessed!”

Chris Clarkson MP has also been contacted for comment.
