£1.4m raised by NorthCare charity in 2021 to support local NHS patients

Date published: 29 January 2022

Despite being a difficult and challenging year, £1.4m was raised by the NorthCare charity in 2021, which will support local NHS patients providing care, equipment and facilities that go beyond the health service’s usual scope.

The NHS charity helps provide innovative equipment, education, research and wellbeing support across the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group in Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Salford.

Many NHS patients last year became fundraisers for the charity, including a police officer, based at Rochdale police station, who was left paralysed after a brain injury.

Tim Greenwood, of Chadderton, Oldham, ran 300-miles throughout March 2021 as part of his #300in30 fundraiser for NorthCare, which supports The Royal Oldham Hospital and Salford Royal where Tim was treated.

Tim completed the challenge at Boundary Park - home of his beloved Oldham Athletic AFC, having raised more than £7,300.

Other patients to have raised thousands for the charity last year include a 26-year-old ballroom dancer who is battling an aggressive blood cancer; a dad who was left paralysed down his left side following a stroke caused by a brain haemorrhage; and a man who sustained multiple head, spinal, shoulder and chest injuries as well as breaking several bones in a freak cycling accident the previous year.

Stephen Owen, fundraising manager at NorthCare Charity, said: “Through people’s generous donations we continually support NHS staff to deliver the best care possible for over a million patients and their families every year in the Rochdale, Oldham, Bury and Salford areas.

“We’re starting 2022 with some amazing fundraising opportunities and we would love to hear from more volunteers to help us so we can do even more this year.

“I would like to thank everyone who has raised money for us, no matter how big or small, shared a tweet or even given some our fundraisers a wave – it has been a hugely valuable support and I would like to thank everyone.”
