Classically-trained pianist Margarita Capas and her WonderPiano students performed a Christmas musical concert at St Chad’s Parish Church on 20 December.
Overall, 36 pieces were performed, all connected by the ‘winter wonderland’ theme.
The concert started with Margarita, of Castleton, playing Minuet by Handel (arr. Kempff) which set a magical and calm mood.
After that followed some famous gentle melodies performed by students: Morning - theme from Grieg's suite Peer Gynt; Ice Skaters; Snowflake Rag; Winter Sky; A Snowy Owl; Winter Solstice dance; and many more pieces that capture the beauty of winter.
The audience was treated to Chopin's Nocturne c sharp minor performed by Margarita's son, Marijus, who is currently studying piano and composition at Chetham's school of music.
The second half of the concert programme was dedicated to traditional Christmas carols performed as solo piano arrangements or duets, from the sacred and calm Away in a Manger, Silent Night and The First Noel to the more uplifting Carol of the Bells, Deck the Halls and other well-known tunes like Frosty the Snowman, Oh Christmas Tree and Jingle Bell Rock.
The concert was finished by Margarita and Marijus' expressive fiery duet, Sleigh Ride Duet Fantasy.
The concert raised £180, which was donated to the voluntary organisation Parents Against Grooming UK. The funds went towards their Christmas grotto for underprivileged children.
Margarita said: “It was lovely to see a full hall of people.
“The concert was an amazing event full of emotions and applause. The students and I are very grateful for this opportunity to come together and share our talent and love for music with everyone.
“We all are looking forward to our next event which will take place in July.”
