Deeplish Community Centre volunteers recognised for achievements throughout pandemic

Date published: 29 August 2021

Volunteers at Deeplish Community Centre have been recognised for their contribution to community projects and achievements throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Awards and certificates were presented to the volunteers by the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Aasim Rashid and Rochdale’s MP, Sir Tony Lloyd.

Some of the work carried out by the volunteers include first aid skills and a successful playscheme project which benefitted over 150 children. A playscheme and volunteers’ steering group is actively working hard to campaign for better resources and services to support 'changing and challenging needs' of the community.

Civic leaders were also briefed about the work of the playscheme as well as a consultation with local families to make Stoneyfield Park safer and more accessible for all.

The playscheme volunteers also received certificates from Mr Lloyd, whilst local councillors presented certificates to the children and young people who took part in the programme.

The Mayor of Rochdale said: “It is great to see children and young people’s achievements as well as see them developing community leadership skills.

“I am pleased to see the success of the volunteers’ action in the playscheme and their quality work throughout the pandemic. It’s good to visit Deeplish Community Centre again now after lockdown, and we hope to keep everyone safe and secure by adhering to public health guidelines.”

Milkstone & Deeplish ward councillor Mohammed Zaman said: “Thank you [Deeplish Community Centre] for running two successful and much-needed play scheme projects.

“Parents tend to be under a lot of stress during the school holidays, keeping children occupied at home and also coping with Covid. Play scheme sessions not only provide a break for parents, but help young people learn life skills as well as enhancing their health and wellbeing.

“The excellent work by staff and a committed team of volunteers has been a prime example of positive community work under good leadership and management, where people are truly and actively involved in making a difference locally.”

Chair of Deeplish Community Centre, Mohammed Saleem JP added: “We are proud to respond to local community needs during this difficult time with limited resources.

“We are grateful for our staffing and volunteering action; it is a true example of partnership, co-operation in empowering and strengthening communities.”
